I’m sure you’ve heard the news and probably have already seen quite a few blog posts about the new Shake Shack that opened in Chestnut Hill, MA. Located in the area’s new shopping center called “The Street” it is a quick 25 minute drive from downtown Boston so this past Saturday I headed that way with a few friends to check it out.
Shake Shack is known for their burgers, milkshakes, and frozen custard but also serve hot dogs, fries, beer, wine, and even snacks for your dog! Dog treats sure will come in handy since you will most likely wait in line for at least a half hour due to the popularity of the restaurant that generates a line that wraps around the building. However, if you decide you are only there for a cold treat such as a shake or custard you can hop in what is called the “C-Line” and get what you want in just minutes!
Here’s the photo when we finally made it to the door – you can see the line wrapped around the window outside. It definitely moves though!
To the right of the registers you can find a floor to ceiling menu wall including their “Custard Calendar” which displays the featured flavors for each month. Check out their website for the current Custard Calendar flavors.
Here’s a couple shots of the action going on behind the counter – they sure do have a lot of employees back there working hard!
Once an order is placed guests are given a buzzer. Orders only take a few minutes to be ready but good luck snagging a table in this busy joint!
Speaking of the tables, each one is handcrafted in Brooklyn, NY using wood which was once the surface of a bowling lane.
Here is what our spread looked like! Not bad huh?
The burger on the left is the Shack Stack which is a cheeseburger and a ‘Shroom Burger (a crispy-fried portobello mushroom filled with melted muenster and cheddar cheese) topped with lettuce, tomato and their famous ShackSauce which is a combination of mayo, ketchup, mustard, dill pickles, garlic powder, paprika and cayenne pepper.
The frozen custard on the left is the “Lobstah Shell” which is vanilla custard, lobster tail pastry shell (from the North End!), strawberry puree and ricotta cream.
Here’s a closer shot of the ‘Shroom burger. I tried a bit of it and it was great! Be careful – the cheese inside is like molten lava.
Here’s a close up of my burger which was the “SmokeShack”. This is a cheeseburger topped with applewood smoked bacon, a chopped cherry pepper, and ShackSauce.
I’m not a huge burger fan but I liked how they don’t cut the bun all the way through so the contents of the burger don’t fall out. I also liked the kick from the cherry peppers.
The cheese fries were by far the stand out of the meal for me. Crinkle cut Yukon potatoes topped with cheddar and American cheese? YES PLEASE.
Last but not least, the frozen custard. Shake Shack has a few combinations that they dreamt up and they are listed on the menu under “Concretes”. You can also mix and match to make your own.
I tried the “Shack Attack” which is chocolate custard, fudge sauce, chocolate truffle cookie dough and Mast Brothers Shake Shack dark chocolate chunks and topped with chocolate sprinkles. I am so happy I got a half portion of this because it was very rich and I was already very full from my burger.
I love dark chocolate but this was a little too dark and unsweetened for me. Next time I think I want to try a regular old milk shake or make my own with chocolate and peanut butter.
I had never been to a Shake Shack in New York so I think it was definitely worth the trip!
